What Does an Interstate Moving Company Do?
An interstate moving company helps transport household goods from one state to another. Depending on the company and services selected, it may provide loading, transportation, unloading, packing, furniture disassembly and reassembly, storage, and specialty-item handling.
For interstate household-goods moves, the company performing the transportation must have the appropriate federal operating authority. Some companies operate as carriers, meaning they physically transport your belongings, while others operate as brokers, meaning they arrange the move with a licensed carrier.
Before choosing a company, confirm whether you are dealing with the mover that will actually transport your shipment or with a broker arranging transportation on your behalf.
How Interstate Moves Are Priced
Estimate Type: Interstate movers may provide binding or non-binding estimates. A binding estimate generally fixes the price for the items and services listed, while a non-binding estimate is an approximation and the final transportation charges may depend on the actual shipment weight, services provided, and the mover’s tariff.
Shipment Size & Distance: The amount of household goods being transported and the distance between your origin and destination are common pricing factors. Larger shipments and longer routes generally cost more.
Services & Access Conditions: Packing, unpacking, storage, specialty-item handling, stairs, elevators, long carries, shuttle service, difficult parking, and other accessorial services can increase the total cost.
Additional or Changed Services: Adding belongings or requesting services that were not included in the original estimate can change the amount you ultimately pay. Review any revised estimate before the shipment is loaded.
Key Things to Check Before Choosing an Interstate Mover
FMCSA Registration & Operating Authority: Verify the company’s U.S. DOT number and confirm that it has the appropriate federal authority to transport household goods interstate. A U.S. DOT number by itself does not necessarily mean the company is authorized to perform your move.
Carrier or Broker: Determine whether the company will physically transport your belongings or is a broker arranging transportation with another mover. Both interstate movers and household-goods brokers must be registered with FMCSA.
Valuation Protection: Interstate movers must offer Full Value Protection and Released Value Protection. Released Value Protection provides limited protection based on the weight of the damaged or lost item, while Full Value Protection provides substantially greater responsibility for the shipment.
Written Estimate: Make sure you receive a written estimate describing the shipment, services, and expected charges. A verbal price or simple “rate quote” is not the same as the federally required estimate.
Customer Reviews & Complaint History: Look beyond one overall rating. Review patterns involving estimates, pickup and delivery, communication, damage claims, billing, and unexpected charges.
