Before You Hire a Moving Company

Get multiple estimates and compare what is included. Look beyond the total price. Check whether packing, stairs, long carries, bulky items, storage, shuttle service, and other services are included or may cost extra.

Don’t choose a mover based only on the lowest price. A significantly lower estimate can be attractive, but make sure you understand why it is lower and whether the estimate reflects everything you need.

Verify the mover before booking. Check licensing or registration requirements that apply to your type of move, review the company’s information, and make sure the name on your estimate matches the company you intend to hire.

Read the estimate and moving documents before signing. Make sure the services, pickup and delivery information, charges, and other important terms are clearly stated.

Never sign blank or incomplete documents. If something you discussed with the mover is important to the price or service, have it documented before signing.

Packing Tips That Can Prevent Problems

Pack a first-night box. Include toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, medications, chargers, toilet paper, towels, bedding, and anything else you’ll want immediately after arriving.

Keep medications, important documents, keys, chargers, and valuables with you. Don’t pack items you may urgently need or that would be difficult to replace inside the moving truck.
