What Does a Full-Service Moving Company Do?

Full-service movers can handle most of the physical work involved in a move, including loading, transportation, unloading, and basic furniture handling. Many companies also offer packing, unpacking, furniture disassembly and reassembly, storage, specialty-item handling, and other services for an additional charge.

“Full service” does not necessarily mean every service is included in the base price. Compare written estimates carefully so you know exactly what each mover will—and will not—handle.

How Full-Service Moves Are Priced

Distance, Shipment Size & Move Type: Local full-service moves are commonly priced by the hour, while interstate moves may be priced using factors such as shipment weight, distance, services requested, and the mover’s tariff or pricing structure.

Packing & Additional Services: Full-service moving costs can increase when you add professional packing, unpacking, custom crating, storage, specialty-item handling, long carries, stairs, shuttle service, or other additional services.

Estimate Type: For interstate moves, understand whether you are receiving a binding or non-binding estimate and exactly which services and charges are included. Always review the written estimate before agreeing to the move.

Key Things to Check Before Choosing a Full-Service Mover

Licensing & Operating Authority: For interstate moves, verify the mover’s U.S. DOT number and household-goods operating authority through FMCSA. For moves entirely within one state, check the licensing requirements of the appropriate state agency.

Liability Protection: Interstate movers must offer Full Value Protection and Released Value Protection. Released Value provides only $0.60 per pound per article, so understand the difference before making your selection.

Customer Feedback & Complaint History: Look beyond a single overall rating. Review recurring feedback about communication, pickup and delivery, damages, estimates, claims, and unexpected charges.

Best Practices for a Smooth Full-Service Move

Request a Detailed Survey or Estimate: Give the mover an accurate inventory of everything being moved. For interstate moves, understand when an in-person survey is required and whether you have waived one. Review the resulting written estimate carefully. FMCSA notes that, in certain circumstances, a physical survey is required when the customer is within 50 miles of the mover or its agent, unless the customer waives that requirement.

Declutter Before Getting Final Quotes: Selling, donating, or discarding items you don’t plan to move can reduce the size of your shipment and may lower your moving cost.

Review the Inventory and Loading Process: Check the inventory and condition of your belongings, identify high-value or fragile items, and keep important documents with you. FMCSA also recommends supervising the loading and unloading process.
